Relay coil surge supression question

I need to find some surge supressors for some AB 100 series contactors
with 24VDC coils. Since information on obsolete or out of production
components seems to be non-existant at AB I'm not sure what to use. I
notice that there are diode as well as MOV based supressors on the
market and I was wondering if I could get a little help selecting
something suitable. I wasn't sure if a diode would slow down the relay
release or what the advantages of MOV type are. ALso is there a way to
determine the values needed? Thanks for any help!!
