Hey, you mention that it wasn't fast enough...

Rotate your stepper 90 degrees and use a cable or timing belt drive.
Your loads are small and now it can be scary fast. (even 100 rpm of
an L/R drive with a 1" pulley will be over 300IPM!)

Cable may not have great ACCURACY, but its repeatability will be
more than up to the task, IME.

You can also use cable's slip to your advantage. Simply home farther
than your axis travel distance. A stalled stepper does no harm to
itself, and when you stop homing, you'll be within a couple
microsteps of the same place each time. No switch needed.

Very nice to see a CNC app that's not for cutting.
