Don't do that, open up the drive and find the current sense resistor
and hook one of these across it:

In geckos, they're connected to the low-side driver and are 0.025 ohm,
making the display fullscale at 8 amps.
Or if you're really anal about not calculating that 2.5 is really 1,
you could divide the sense resistor voltage by 2.5 and get a 1:1
correspondence to the digits, and a 20 amp full scale.
