All you need is a NE555 timer chip a few resistors and a cap and a
potentiometer to perform the duties of a signal generator. Then you would
need a three position rotary switch to select the axis.
You can then connect this to the controller to replace the pc and simply
select the axis, flip the direction switch and turn up the speed. The
stepper then acts like a power feed. I did this on an earlier version of my
5A drivers. It worked out pretty good. I'll see if I can find my schematic
for this.
