I thought someone else was the original poster, but I missed the name.
I really like to address one or more persons by name in my emails where
appropriate.

Yes, and after the power and ground are identified, a 'scope, logic
probe, or even sometimes less (led or multimeter) can tell one what the
signal lines are.

Trace the circuits and the buffer chips used (or other circuitry) can be
identified. Sometimes entire boards can be of use. It's always a good
idea to trace out stepper windings... you can find the appropriate
driver chip(s) that way!
