Yes. I did this "first step" myself, as I had built only a lathe,
previously, NOT any kind of X-Y table. It was a GOOD idea which was FULL of necessary
education!
2. I plan on only procuring one set of: Software, interface breakout board
and motor controllers. Does this make sense?<<
Well, I can't properly comment on those points, as when I did it, the only
"software" around was GWBASIC, and I had taught myself that, and a LITTLE
"machine-code"---enough to simplify "pulsing" the stepper-drives. Breakout
board? I used 74HCnn IC's and "one-off home-brew PC-boards"!!! I'd do the same,
now, but I suppose those who "can do the machine" but "not the electronics"
have to look to Mariss for such.
Essentially this question boils down to: Can I use larger controllers
(i.e. Gecko) for small motors at first and then larger ones later <<
Then your plotter would be "stripped" and useless! Design the plotter using
Xylotex and NEMA 17 or even NEMA 23 steppers, LEAVE it built, when done and
all working and understood, then use Geckos for the "big version"!
Lotsa luck! Watch your machining workmanship, cause "sloppy" will make it
fail!
