Gas Springs

You can get gas springs from MSC that are very cheap and I think
pretty reliable. I bought two and used them as lid closers. They were
about 5 bucks each after buying all the ball ends and sockets, etc.
Page 1782 in the new MSC catalog. I bought mine from one of their
sale flyers and it looks like they don't carry as many as they used to.
They act like a spring and damper combination.
Just don't buy them from any automobile place $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
