In general, I say yes. The interesting thing is that the newer electronics
makes things worse. When outputs have fast edges, you get reflections
regardless your bit rate. In pulse driven interfaces like this, you get
double pulses, confusing counters.

And the CMOS inputs are extremely sensitive to radiated noise.

You, and frankly anyone would be best off to get used to using shielded
twisted pair for signaling. Shielded CAT5 works great. But if you can't get
shielded cable at the very least configure your machines with differential
signaling. Be in the habit of it and save the aggravation later when
regulatory agencies suddenly declare that your shop must be shielded.

If you want me to look at schematics, I can. I make 2.5 GHz go through 40 in
of PCB traces, connectors and vias -- I'm sure I can help out with 25 kHz.
