Pointers for a CNC Noob

Hi Guys,
Usually I like to start with a book and then develop my own tweeks.
My knowledge of CNC is limited to this Draw a picture, convert it to a
dxf, convert it to G-code(?), then run it to your CNC machine. So I'm
a noob.
I have visited a few sites around the net, but would like some pointers
to consolidate the fragments of information gleaned.
