I seem to remember that there was one pin with a pulse out to tell the
breakout board that the software was in control of the port. so, that
would be already used.

And since 2 thru 9 are also used, that means there are only a few left.

and, I seem to recall some long time ago that there was on pin that
was somehow less than ideal for a pulse train.
