Jim,
Racking or twisting can be a real problem with a gantry system depending on
the design and parts used. Designers that have created a good design will
not have a problem.
Many good designs like the ez-router www.ez-router.com drive both sides of
the X axis with separate stepper motors. This is common practice. Mach has
provisions for squaring the table when the user homes the X axis.
