spindle start and stop

Hi,
I wish to start and stop the spindle on the machine I am building
using M codes (M3, M5 ?) What would be the proceedure? I can remember
reading somehere that a relay connected to a pin on the port will do
the trick? The drive motor is a 3.3 amp.
