Can you give us a little more info? What distribution, what version, what graphical user interface, what initialization file.
In general, you open a file with the G code and run it. With most of the graphical interfaces there is a button to open a file along with the normal expected buttons run, abort, pause, resume, feedhold, e-stop etc.
To actually enter a program you can use the built in editor to type in the file or to edit an existing file while EMC is running. You can also start a new file from scratch or edit an existing file using another editor from the desktop before you start running EMC.
There is a series of good examples and explanations in the ENC-2 manual at linuxcnc.org.

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] EMC-2 help
Gentlemen, I have struggled for a very long time to get Linux EMC-2 on
a computer. But, having achieved this feat I cannot find how to enter
a G code program into the software. I have searched for info from
Linux but no luck. I have used AHHA's Artisan with out any problems
such as these. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Richard Butterick.
