I'd say it's under the table. The gantry is probably running on linear ways
that are shrouded to keep out dust. The drive might be steel bands (like the
old drafting machines had) operated by a shaft at one end under the table,
perpendicular to the axis motion. If it's leadscrew driven, either there's a
single leadscrew driving a bar that connects both sides of the gantry under
the table, or there's a leadscrew per side with dual motors that run in sync
(you often see this expressed as XYYZ).
