Unless you are going to be running your spindle at VERY low speeds, you
won't need a special motor. If you have doubts about cooling at your lowest
speed, just use a small enclosure cooling fan like the ones used in electronic
enclosures mounted so it blows on the fan end of the motor. I have been
servicing and installing industrial CNC machinery for over 20 years and during that
time have put VFD units on a lot of equipment, I have only changed out the
motors to inverter or vector rated motors two or three times and had no
problems with the standard three phase motors. So, to sum it up, you don't need a
special motor unless you are doing some very advanced functions with your
spindle.
