Hello Everyone,
A few days ago I offered to supply some information about the PIC
Microcontroller for those wanting to get started with it or at least take a
look at it. Since there was a number of people that contacted me directly I
think there is enough interest to provide it to the list. I have no
commercial interest in any of these sites other than as a customer.
My interest in these things was fueled by a desire to build my own DRO.
(which I still have not done) I have wandered far afield with experiments,
learned a lot and had fun.
The information provided is by no means complete there are thousands of PIC
related sites

http://www.dontronics.com/index.html
This is an Australian Site that has a lot of very good stuff related to PICs

http://melabs.com/mel/home.htm
This is the site for MELABS the provider of PIC BASIC compilers. They have
provided excellent support something that I have heard is not too good from
some of the other suppliers. I also like their upgrade policy. They
generally stay current with any new PIC chips that are released. They also
sponsor a chat group that is very helpful.

http://www.wirz.com/index.html
WIRZ electronics is a good source for information and PIC related products.
They have also been very helpful to me.

The chip I started with is the 16F84 which is kind of
a middle size PIC. It has flash memory so it can be reprogrammed over and
over and
is cheap. In small quantities it goes for around $7.00 US.

These are the first and second books I acquired
to learn more about the PIC. My electronics
experience is pretty basic (no pun intended)
and I was not overwhelmed by them.
I selected the BASIC language because I was all ready familiar with it. The
are C compilers available as well a Assembler.

Easy PIC'n - A Beginner's Guide to Using PIC16/17 Microcontrollers - $29.95
by David Benson

PIC'n Up The Pace - PIC16/17 Microcontroller Applications Guide - $34.95
by David Benson

This PC Board is available from MELABS for the experiments in the above two
books.
PICProto S1 - $14.95

Another very interesting site is this one
http://www.parallaxinc.com/
they make the BASIC Stamp witch is a tiny computer built around the PIC that
is programmable directly in BASIC. They also provide a wealth of
application information. The advantage here is that you don't need a
compiler, the down
side is that it is slower and more expensive, but if you are only going to
do one
or two it may be cheaper overall.

And last but not least
http://www.microchip.com/
The makers of the PIC chip This site has all kinds
of information regarding their products. Most of it available in PDF
format.They
also have some free development software which for me was not easy to use.
They also have a policy of providing free samples to develops that inquire
through their distributors which are listed on the site.

I'm not familiar with sources in the UK or Europe in general, maybe some
list member
will provide those sources.
I hope this information is helpful, anyone please jump in with corrections,
comments, etc.
Thank you,
Bob B.
