meaning it can contain bitmaps, text and vector files. In a lot of
PDF files (usually by default in the application that generates it)
the file is protected (locked) from being able to be disassembled and
to use the pieces. It would be my last choice of a format to use for
CNC file transfer.
If you can get the files in EPS, AI, CDR, DWG, DXF or any other pure
vector format the conversion will be less painful.

PDF stands for Portable Document Format and is used for viewing and
printing mixed media documents.
