advice on electronics please

I would like to get some drive electronics to go between Mach3 and some very
nice stepper motor stages.
These have size 23 motors, coupled to a fine pitch screw to the stages,
which have a 4" travel. These are intended for measurements in the micron
range. So I don't need the ultimate in power or speed, just a nice
microstepping driver. If possible, I'd like to use the USB connection- are
these devices ready for prime time?
The drive electronics that came with these stages used proprietary
connections and software, I have no interest in making it work. Will strip
out the boxes and reuse them.
Manufactuer is Compumotor. The motors seem to have six wires, two sets of
center tapped coils, measuring 22 ohms from the centertap. So, from what
I've read, that will such for high speed, but for now I'll go slow and
upgrade as necessary.
I've seen mention of lots of different breakout boards, USB connectors, and
microstepping drives. Could someone share their experience with me and say
what actually works?
Thanks very much.
