OK, although I have an 18" digital caliper, I wouldn't want to use it for
such. Still, if it was cheap...
Get a Sherline encoder and put it on the leadscrew? They have the display
as well. May not be that cheap.
A small PIC or AVR demo board with a display could be put into service to
read the encoder (easy to do) and convert to inches or whatever you'd like.
All it takes is a little code...
