Well, considering the OP was trying to replace a tape measure, a cheap
caliper would probably work just fine. However, you can buy
stand-alone single axis digital readouts which use the same scales as
the multi-axis versions, just with an integrated display. I know that
Mitutoyo makes them and I'm pretty sure other companies do as well.
