Rob,

I have the Next engine scanner and am satisfied with it. For football sized parts or smaller it would be fine. The real trick with 3D scanning is not the hardware, but the software in my experience. Just having a point cloud is about useless except for showing others and everyone thinking it is cool. The real value comes in being able to convert the scan into a true clean 3D CAD model. I got the RapidWorks package with my Next engine scanner and it is the part that makes the process usable for me. Essentially you use the scan as a base to redraw the part in CAD. That way you eliminate the inconsistencies from the manufacturing of the part and are able to get it back to the original design intent.
