As I have found out, scanning is only half the equasion. I've been using scans as part of my model making efforts. If they are precisely what you need as is it works fine but if you need to modify the scan before printing the part it's a major PIA. To modify the resultant mesh requires fairly advanced skills and in some cases software.
I am resorting to measuring and modeling in Rhino. I also use photos as a bit map background for design work. I am hoping to also use a cnc router for measurement of a part on a grid pattern to establish surfaces of a part to be modeled.
What Jay is doing is fairly simple and some of the parts could actually be designed in solid modeling or cad software pretty easily. I think for him it's just a toy! Wish I could afford his toys!
