An encoder on the end of your screw would probably be a lot more durable and
cheap than a scale and just as accurate.
For environmental considerations, I would look at a desktop case sealed in a
box.
What sort of action would this be doing -- I am in the Pacific Northwest and
have visited a few mills (have friends that work there).
