In its simplest form it can be simply a bit of rod held in the chuck- it works as a switch by completing a circuit with the machine or part, or in the case of fancier probes like the Renishaw design it lifts a rod off of a set of ball bearings to break a normally closed contact inside the probe (Google "DIY touch probe")

More complicated probes can be wireless by use of an inductive pickup, infrared light, or even radio frequency transmitters so that the probe can be dropped into and recovered from toolchange racks or carousels.

If you need a 2D probe to find features like edges and hole centers, you can easily adapt an elecrtronic edgefinder for about $20.

If you need a 3d probe with z axis overtravel you can make or buy one, or find a good used one on ebay.Generally you can forget about the box, you really don't need that part for the older probe heads as they can be directly "hot wired"very easily.

Hello,

I'm looking for some information about touch probe. How does it work? How the probe comunicate with the machine in which is installed? Is it possible to have a wireless touch probe?

Thanks
