I lost this message in my spam filter, so my suggestion is late.

You're talking about a varying pitch along the Z axis? And you know how
to make simpler twisted turnings with a gcode program? Then I suggest
that a BASIC (or whatever language) or other program could calculate the
change in pitch, and generate a gcode program to cut the tapered twisted
turnings.

I have a solution to this but it goes part and parcel with my original question. mechanically this was time consuming and took a great deal of hardware in comparison to what I think would be needed for using a linked system of steppers.
