Just uploaded a video I shot yesterday of peck drilling through a .375" nylon gear hub that is on a .125 stainless shaft. Focus is poor as it way my 1st attempt with my new G2 phone. But it clearly illustrates the advantage of high speed rapids even when doing tiny parts.

The machine is our full Monster mill with a 10k rpm Sherline spindle mounted and using 4 tpi screws. The software is an old version of Mach2, the drive electronic is a old Xylotec 4 axis board that well known for resonance issues as it has no electronic dampening. Motors are 235 oz/in square style. The cutting feedrate is 2.5 ipm, the rapid rate is 75 ipm and the peck increment is .025". Drill bit is a .035" carbide PCB drill.

You can imagine how much longer this would have taken with the Stock Sherline 20 tpi screws and the semi-reliable max rate in the 10 - 20 ipm range most users get with them. I had about 85 shafts to do and they were all completed with one bit.

For anyone interested, the fixture was 3D printed on our uPrint Plus machine. It is basically a V-block with cut outs to fit various gear combinations that are used in the part I am making. It is slotted down both Y axis sides and a U shape clamp slides in. Retention is with a 10-32 set screw in the top of the U pressing on the shaft. Only work required after taking it out of the 3D printer was a trip to the ultrasonic to remove the support material and then running a tap through the alreay properly sized hole. Hard to print good threads this small. So I have found it better to print in the hole and then just use a spiral flute tap in the cordless drill and run it straight through.
