CNC of lathe

I've salvaged a wood lathe and an old Craftsman lathe. I'm thinking about venturing into making one or both CNC. I get the need for bed feed and crossfeed steppers, as seen in several kits online, but don't I need some sort of tach/encoder on the spindle too? thanks C
