Yes, but it is not unusual to see a 1 ppt (yes, 1 pulse per turn)
encoder on the spindle. Using 1PPT means you get a free index and can
interpolate other indices. That relies on a solid spindle drive. For a
good servo spindle, a many PPT encoder is desirable. For turning ONLY
operations, no encoder is needed.
