Stepper motor connection

I have a need to position two arms that will always be at the same angle but are not easy to connect to one drive. I want to use two stepper motors, one for each arm. The motor will run a nut on a screw no more than three inches total.
Can I connect the motor windings in series given the power supply and driver has sufficient voltage and current? Would there be any reason they would not step together?
The motors are six wire, unipolar. My driver is bipolar.
