Yes, this technology is well known and I seem to remember seeing something in the UK model engineering mags on this topic in the last few years as well as in some of the DIY books from those publishers. Naturally they make their own cutters and hardened them before sharpening and using them. Dave

Nothing new here. This technology was introduced to me in the 60's in a kinematics class in engineering school. IIRC the instructor said it was from the teens's Harry J. Watts, for whom the drill is named after, actually received a patent (#1,241,176) for it on September 25, 1917.
