Hexapods / Stewart Platforms

There was a lot of interest on this list 10 or so years back in using EMC (now LinuxCNC) to drive hobbyist hexapods. 

Looking to explore this area and build at least a basic machine to learn and understand more of what they can offer. Anyone have any experience with any of this they can share or some saved links they can point me to? I did look at what is referenced off the LinuxCNC.org site, but still wanting to learn more from other peoples experience before I start buying parts and making chips.
