I would suggest looking at getting one of Dan's Camtronics (
http://www.seanet.com/~dmauch/ ) chopper style stepper drivers. I had one of
his old model 5 amp controllers hooked to a Sherline for a while and it
worked great. I then used it on my Shoptask for a year. They are on sale at
10% off until tomorrow (9/8)
