Roland Retrofit

My company has an opportunity to get a Roland DG PC3000 in trade
(free) and they want me to evaluate it's usefulness. It is
approximately 10 years old.
I want to use the new Gecko servo drivers and retrofit this thing
with a Step/Dir PC control system. I am assuming they use DC servos?
The existing controls are very limiting (HPGL 2D, pen up/pen down) and
proprietary.
Anyone know anything about these little Roland mills? Would this be
a straightforward conversion? I have done a couple stepper systems but
no servos.
