If both ends of the cable/connector are wired the same, and connected to a 3
phase supply which has only 4 wires (most 208/220/240 3 phase is Delta
connected and therefore only has 4 wires, 3 hot plus a ground) there is no
problem. I agree that if you are connecting it to a 3 phase line and then to
a single phase device you have a BIG problem. However, the connector doesn't
care as long as you have made your 3 phase connections correctly. The
voltage and currect ratings apply equally to single or three phase ( NOT
horsepower ratings tho, as single phase motors pull hugely larger current
loads than their respective 3 phase sizes). The voltage rating is determined
by the rating of the insulating material used and the current rating is based
on the material and size of the contacts used. This doesn't change with 3 or
single phase use. One must keep in mind that the NEC and OSHA, plus NEMA are
trying to fool proof everything, along with making it as complex as possible.
Again, as long as the person is using the cable 3 phase to 3 phase it will
work and be safe. When you purchase a 12/4 type S or SO cable for use,
neither it nor the NEC indicate if it is for use with 3 phase or single
phase, that is for the electrician or engineer to determine and the color
codes of the wires in that cable are Red, Black, White and Green, just like a
4 wire single phase would be. And the only difference between the cables is
that type S is for 300V or less and type SO is good up to 600V. They both
use stranded copper wire and depending on what you need have the same wire
gauge.

I am not trying to offend anyone but it seems everyone on the list is looking
for good deals and the one on this is a good one but I will concede people
need to be careful when they use it.
