Alan,
PUT AWAY THE FILE!!!
DON'T FILE THE SHERLINE SPINDLE THREADS!!!
Since the NEW adaptor fits only ONE of two NEW threaded accessories,
AND you said the threads "look bad", Just send it back and get
another E/M holder! Sherline is an excellent MFR., but it could be
bad.
The spindle threads on a sherline have no "locating" shoulder as is
found on larger tools. You are filing away (possibly) the
concentricity of the endmill holder(s). And amything else which
depends on this thread.
The end mill holders are held to a tighter tolerance than the chuck
mounts. They have to be "spot on", due to what I've written above.
They are made in a "single chucking" to preserve the relationship of
the E/M hole to the threads which mate to the spindle.
Hope this helps.

I did get a scare trying to thread a new 3/8 end-mill holder onto the
Sherline's spindle. It didn't EVEN want to go on. I just thought
my mill (Sears/Sherline) was too old. then I tried to screw it onto
the chuck adapter that came with the new CNC rotary table. Didn't
go on either! Third try, the adapter from the tilting angle
table. Works fine! So what's going on? I examined the bad
adapter using an 8x loupe, and could see that the threads (rolled?)
didn't look too good. I chased them out with a small file, and some
fine sandpaper, and got it to go on pretty good. I'm working on the
spindle threads now. Much harder work, and I don't want to damage
the threads! Any danger here? I'm not done, it goes on about half
way, then gets tight. Hard to see the threads close enough, hard to
work on. I will be at it some more! These must be close-fit
threads? Am I OK in doing this? Spindle had never been used
before, hard to understand why the threads were bad.
