Thanks Smoke
I think all I need is a stream of pulses to be recognized and counted by the computer. For a given thread pitch the X axis would be fed (X) steps per every spindle pulse. ??? ( to tell the truth I was imagining something like utilizing the pin(s) that what would normally carry a printer's "fault
or out of paper signal" in order to get the encoders pulses into the computer) ????
(I guess it's obvious that I'm no EE)

Building a unit to pick up the actual RPM's would be fairly simple...something I learned in computer repair school back in '75 when there weren't any PC's.
