You got it Bill! A small pick up unit that works directly off your spindle will give you a direct reading of the RPM's. This can be done via a light reflecting paint and a photo diode and the necessary electronics, or something along that line. Where and how it's mounted would depend on your machine construction.

I think all I need is a stream of pulses to be recognized and counted by the computer. For a given thread pitch the X axis would be fed (X) steps per every spindle pulse. ??? ( to tell the truth I was imagining something like utilizing the pin(s) that what would normally carry a printer's "fault
or out of paper signal" in order to get the encoders pulses into the computer) ????
(I guess it's obvious that I'm no EE)
