<< is there any simple way of feeding the output signals from an
encoder to the pc <snip>>for lathe threading
Just a thought here. What about feeding the square wave to
the "microphone" input of a sound card? Does a sound card have any
facility for determining an input frequency?
Could something be written to accomplish this?
I'm way out of my element here.

P.S. It would be fairly simple to just use a "divide by N" circuit
(or PIC program) to do lathe threading WITHOUT the computer. (every N
encoder pulses, spit a stepper pulse). Include the encoder "index"
pulse(if direct driven) or a hall effect "index" input for multiple
start threads. Increasing/decreasing lead would be tougher, but still
PIC-able.
