Thanks for the additional homework on
this one. It sounds like these motors/encoders will be good deals for
their intended application (rotary) only. Thats just fine, but I think
I'll go for the finer resolution of the 360 cpi linear strips. I may go
ahead and order a few for rotary use as well, as the 4th axis needs
degrees anyway. My intended application for the DRO are all old worn
lead screw equipped machines (at this point - ballscrews when I'm ready,
which with this list may be sooner than I first thought :-)

The encoders are HEDS9100-A00 model.
From HP's web site:The HEDS-9000 and HEDS-9100 are designed for use with
codewheels which have an optical radius of 23.36 mm and 11 mm respectively.
The HEDS-9200 is designed for use with a linear codestrip.
The full data sheet is at
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/accesshp/HP-COMP/motion/heds9000.pdf
I just talked with the tech people at US Digital and the answer appears to
be that by design and specification it will not work, but they have never
tried it and think that if the correct LPI strip was used it may be
functional. His calculations are that it would use a strip with 183.8 +- 10%
LPI. So the best resolution would only be about .0015
Based upon the +-10% he thinks the stock 200 LPI strip may work.
