The Zeiss CMM use a crystal to sense first touch and the triggers a
mechanical switch to confirm touch. This is a very sensitive probe allowing
long extensions. Remember that a piezo electric lighter generates it's spark
by striking a crystal. Crystals will generate a voltage when deformed from
what my Zeiss rep. tells me.
