You may have seen an Beta model of a Renishaw probe on a FARO arm at an
exhibition but FARO are a separate company. The Renishaw probe which is
being developed for use on their arm is based on strain gauges. It is very
stiff ie the deflection required to trigger it is very small. That way all
the measurement is done by the encoders in the arm. Triggering the probe
simply tells the control when to read the encoders and store the readings.
LVDT based probes also exist but without multiple LDVT's they are strictly
1D and of little use on a free swinging arm which may approach the work
from whichever direction the operator happens to fancy.
