Router design

I have built two gantry style routers 8x10 and 12x18 and in both of them
I used rails that
were 1" dia DOM steel tubing centerless ground to 25mm and 25mm Nyliner
style bearings, worked very well. I also used lead screws and plastic
adjustable nuts but next time I would use a timing belt and a gearbox.
For a router head I used a Porter Cable drywall router.
For my everyday system I have a Taiwanese knee type vertical mill (a
Select) similar to the Myford VM on which I have hung 2 350 in/oz
steppers driving the ballscrews 2:1 via a timing belt and a 150in/oz
moving the quill via a worm and pinion. The electronics and the sottware
is both from AH-HA.
Click on http://www.sentex.net/~bfairey/millingmc.jpg shows the whole
setup.
http://www.sentex.net/~bfairey/Yaxisdrive.jpg is the setup for the Y
axis and the X axis is similar.
http://www.sentex.net/~bfairey/Zaxisdrive.jpg shows the worm and pinion
to the quill. The two holes in the knob are for screws that dissconnect
the knob from the pinion.
http://www.sentex.net/~bfairey/divhd shows a method I used to drive a
dividing head.Depending on the software on my system programming .025"
means the dividing head rotates 1 degree ( I dont have a 4th axis card
so I have to plug the DH into the Z axis)
Hope this may interest someone.
