I'm not familiar with the L298 chip, but just printed out the application
notes yesterday because the Dan Mauch 2A driver kit I recently built uses
it (and I like to have documentation on all my stuff...)

The ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATINGS table says:

Io Peak Output Current (each channel)

-Non Repetitive (t=100us) 3A
-Repetitive (80%on-20%off; t on=10ms) 2.5A
-DC operation 2A

Also

Vs Power Supply 50V
Vss Logic Supply Voltage 7V
