Re[2]: axis naming conventions

Terry,

Saying that some people do not adhere to the standard is not the same thing=

as saying the standard doesn't exist...

Machine tool axes are WELL defined, and generally agreed upon.
I have done my best (with multiple posts) to share these standards to ensur=
e
that new people coming in do not REMAIN confused by the mis-information on
the net!

I can also build a machine and call its' axes by whatever names I want. Doe=
s
that mean we should write software which allows TRUE axis NAMES: like Betsy=
,
Bobby, and Billy (for X,Y and Z, respectively, and "respectfully" to anyone=
whose
name I just used in the example) Of course, this would be absurd.

The letter names we have for machine tool axis work just fine. And I believ=
e it IS
the responsibility of anyone writing machine tool software to learn, and re=
spect
these conventions, if, and when they are made aware of their(axis names) ex=
istence!

It goes beyond axis names. The EMC uses G38.2 for a simple probe routine,in=
the same
way commercial machines use G31(skip function). They are defining the Next =
Generation
Controller! I asked Tom why he used 38.2? He said, "Why not?". I said, "Bec=
ause the
thing you are doing ALREADY has a number, why not use it?" And REDUCE confu=
sion. Rather
than increase it.

Technology today lets anyone who can type "put his/her opinion out", regard=
less of its'
accuracy. And Call it the absolute truth. When it's not. Lists like this le=
t people
discover, determine, and discern the truth.

If I am wrong, someone will surely let me know :-)

Hope this helps.

P.S. I agree that hexapod axes are NOT as yet, well defined, and in my
last post gave an opinion as to why... You know, they haven't been
around that long. NOT true of Mills and Lathes and Routers and engravers...=

hello;
i do not see any kind of agreement between
cad packages or hexapod support. one posting here stated that supercam xyyz=
was
really xxyz. i have looked at other web sites concerning cad/cam and i see =
no
agreement.
in talking with a machnist late last night he himself stated that there was=
really no
agreement. he has two different versions of cad/cam package from the same
company and they treat the axis differently.
i really wish there was agreement, i really do.
it would make the project easier. as it stands now the user will have to ch=
oose the
names for the axis. has i posted earlier hexapod axis names are definitely =
not
standardized.
