If you can find one the early Round ram Bridgeport mills with the J-
(R-8) pancake motor head are almost as compact as the Clausing and
much more rigid...
They can be had in Good condition for $1000 to 2000 bucks and can
then be rebuilt to as new for another $2000 or so (add a grand if the
head needs rebuilding as well) to have a pro re scrape the table X
travel and fit a set of Ball screws
They lack the nodding donkey motion of the later V ram machines and
are a bit more prone to needing re tramming after hogging cuts...
They do seem to be seen a bit more often with the Morse-3 M head but
it's not hard to mount a later J head if that's all that can be found
in your area and surplus J heads are a found every where... the Mill
I have has the short table (32") and Knee (9") and is quite short and
compact next to the later Series 1 and Series 2 Bridgeport... and
like later Bridgeport Mills they can be retrofitted with things like
Riser blocks for more Z working space
