Hi,

Bill, you mean like an 8038? They're great for what they do, wide
freq range and absolutely monotonic pulse rate.

Unfortunately they are voltage controlled oscillators, meaning their
frequency is dependent on an input voltage, which without a great
deal of trouble cannot be controlled to an accuracy greater than 1%.

Since what is in play is position, no error is tolerable. Instead
frequencies have to be synthesised, i.e. derived from a crystal
oscillator. It is a much more complex solution, but the only one that
guarantees perfect precision (relative as a ratio to the source).

I'm saying this with my teeth clenched because I am an analog EE and
I hate to give any quarter to the digital types.
