Design of I-O Bords

I am new in this group and I have been reading for a while. Apparently
there is an ongoing effort to design different I-O boards and
controllers with discussions of what should be included.

It would be great if the boards could be compatible with a commercial
available one. For example, a simple, stripped down 3-axis encoder I-O
board could have the same address and counter configuration as a
commercial one. Then different software programs would be compatible
without modifications. Persons not inclined to build hardware could buy
the commercial ones and concentrate on writing software or just use what
shareware is available.

I patched in Dan Falk's suggestion below.
