Chris,
I have a welding business located in an industrial condo park in
New England. When the park was built it was decided by the builder to
install 220v single phase power. It was much less expensive than 3 phase
and the kind of businesses that were looking at the properties had no need
for 3 phase.
I called the Electric Co. after I arrived and inquired about three phase
power. Three phase power is available in the park across the street from
my shop. I was told that if one person wanted 3 phase, then everybody
would have to have 3 phase installed because it was a condo association.
Estimated cost was quoted as $6,800.00 per unit x 14 units or $95,200 for
the whole park. After contacting each owner and presenting the idea and
its cost, I ended up being the only one who wanted it. If I wanted three
phase power from Massachusetts Electric Co.,it was going to cost me
$95,200 but everyone would have 3 phase (Thank you very much Wally).
I had a friend install a converter and now I have 3 phase for all of my
machines up to 10 HP. Cost- $450 plus Lunch and a pot of coffee.
Who was it that said,"Land of the Free"?

I would have thought it would be just a phone call, and a few hundred
dollars as it is here. Upgrading to 3 phase in a town here costs in the
order of $600 NZD one off, plus the line charges, which vary between
utilities, but I believe the $3.90 I pay is on the high side due to our
rural location, and we've got the only buried 3 phase feed in our area due
to a 150m long drive, and not wanting power poles along it.
Cheers, Chris.
