Phil,
I would suggest that you go through the group FAQ at
http://www.ktmarketing.com/faq.html and then follow some of the links that
are on the page from the link at the bottom of the FAQ. It will help you
come up to speed.
A stepper motor moves in discreet steps.
A servo is a closed loop system that uses an AC or DC motor.
An encoder is a device to give positional information.
