Based on my understanding (And the great help from Jon and Mariss on
my similar question) is that you could do it IF the "ground" on your
supply was not used (but was common to the two voltage potentials).

i.e. +24---------------->
|
|
|
+12---------------->
|
+5----------------->
|
0V/GND--------------->
|
|
-12---------------->

So if the GND terminal is not connected to your system, and your power
supply has the right internal configuration, you could get a 36 volt
potential between your +24 and -12 terminals using the -12 terminal
as the "low" side. BUT

DANGER DANGER WARNING!!!!

Looking at the diagram above, if -12 is your "low" side then your GND
terminal is at a +12V voltage potential, and your +5 terminal is at a
+17 volts!! (BOOM!).

I'd definitly not recommend this, even though I'm going to try something
a bit similar (I'm going to use a bi-polar power supply to produce 30
volts from +/- 15 volts, but have to make sure that my "0V" connection
(between the two internal low/high supplies) has NO POSSIBLE WAY of
connecting to the system
(either through my own stupidity or something like the chassis/AC
ground).

In short, the description below probably won't work, but I'm not an
expert.

Hope this helps,
murph
